Elevator repairman falls to his death

An elevator repairman plunged ten stories to his death while working on a disabled lift in a Garment District building Friday morning.
The 44-year-old worker somehow lost his balance about 10 a.m. and fell down the elevator shaft in the building on W. 38th St., authorities said.
He was in cardiac arrest when he was taken by FDNY ambulance
to Bellevue University Hospital, where he later died, authorities said. His name was not immediately released.
People who work in the building, which houses a number of garment businesses, reported hearing a sickening sound when the repairman reached the bottom of the shaft.
"It was just a loud boom," said Linda Dimond, 22, of Staten Island, an accountant who works on the ninth floor of the 13-story building.
"I didn't expect that to be somebody falling or anything. I thought it was just an elevator sound. It's kind of scary to think about," she added. "I'm shocked."
A city Buildings Department spokesman said the accident is under investigation. The elevator was closed down, but no violations were issued, the spokesman added.
