MIAMI - Shakira will be recognized as Person of the Year 2011 of the Latin Recording Academy, the organization announced Monday.
Shakira, who received three Latin Grammy nominations this year including Album of the Year, was chosen for her outstanding artistic achievements, and philanthropic, the academy said in a statement. The Colombian singer will receive the award at a gala dinner and concert that will feature multiple artists on 9 November in Las Vegas.
Part of the proceeds from the gala will benefit the work of the Barefoot Foundation, as well as education programs of the Latin Recording Academy. The distinction will precede the 12th Annual Latin Grammy, awarded by the academy, which will take place in Las Vegas on November 10 and will be broadcast live on the Univision Network.
"We are proud to honor this woman whose generosity has benefited a good number of people, mostly children, whose influence is evident around the world, whether in the personal and musically," said Gabriel Abaroa, president and Director General of the Latin Recording Academy, the statement said.
Shakira's philanthropic efforts began at 18 when he created the Pies Descalzos Foundation, a charity that provides special schools for poor children in Colombia. The singer is an ambassador for Unicef Goodwill for their participation in world affairs and his deep commitment to children. As an advocate of universal education, Shakira also served as honorary president of the Global Campaign for Education, raising awareness about the Law of Education for All in America.
Shakira is the youngest person to receive the recognition of the Person of the Year. Thus joins a list of artists that includes, among others, Placido Domingo, Carlos Santana, Gloria Estefan, Gilberto Gil, Julio Iglesias and Ricky Martin.
